Tooth Extractions

Extractions are usually only performed when necessary & for various reasons, including:

  • Teeth that are extensively decayed or damaged beyond repair may need to be extracted to prevent the spread of infection and preserve oral health. Advanced gum disease can also lead to loosening of teeth and bone loss. In some cases, extraction of severely affected teeth may be necessary to manage the progression of the disease.
  • Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, often don’t have enough space to fully emerge or develop properly. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, infection, and damage to neighboring teeth, making extraction necessary.
  • In cases where there is severe dental crowding, extraction of one or more teeth may be required to create enough space for proper alignment during orthodontic treatment.
  • If you’re getting dentures or dental implants, extraction may be necessary to create space and ensure a proper fit for the prosthetic teeth.

The extraction procedure may involve the use of local anesthesia to numb the area and minimize discomfort. In more complex cases or impacted teeth, oral surgery techniques may be employed. After the extraction, proper aftercare instructions will be provided to promote healing and minimize any potential complications.

After an Extraction, Always:

  • Rinse carefully with saltwater.
  • Eat soft foods.
  • Brush carefully.
  • Use medication as prescribed.
  • Remember that swelling is normal.

Extractions can make some people nervous about going to the dentist, but we also offer sedation options to make you comfortable. If you have any questions about our extraction process or the healing period afterward, give our office a call, and we will be glad to help.
