What can I expect at my regular dental cleaning?
Even if you have excellent at-home dental hygiene habits, it is important to visit the dentist regularly for professional dental cleanings. If you have been away from the dentist for several years, or if you are preparing for your first-ever professional dental cleaning at our Lake Worth office, you may be wondering what you can expect at your appointment.
Regular Dental Appointments
Most dental “check-up” appointments last around 45 minutes. The first step at most appointments will be taking x-rays if they are needed. It is important to have regular x-rays taken, usually once every two or three appointments, to check for decay or damage that might not be visible to the naked eye.
Purpose of Dental Cleanings
After x-rays, a dental hygienist will then professionally clean your teeth. The purpose of this cleaning is to remove any plaque that has built up since your last appointment, as well as to check your gums for inflammation, bleeding, or other signs of periodontal disease. The hygienist will also floss and polish your teeth during this phase.
Thorough Dental Exam
The last portion of your dental appointment is usually devoted to one of our talented Palms Dental Care dentists examining your mouth after the cleaning. Our dentists check for any loose or broken teeth and observe the overall condition of your gums and smile. This usually takes around five minutes. After they are done, you are free to leave!
